![]() SSAB Strikes Again! As often happens at SSAB, employee ideas develop into outstanding community service activities. Dennis Begyn,a Maintenance Planner in the Melt Shop/Caster Maintenance Department at SSAB was asked if he could produce a no frills bar-b-cue to use at employee picnics and other events. Well, not only did Dennis Begyn come up with a Bar-B-Cue, but he designed and built one that was modeled after one of our EAF furnaces. Then as usual with Dennis, one idea led to another and Dennis suggested that we use the bar-b-cue to cook brats and hamburgers for employees at lunch time with any profits going to the United Way. So far, the janitorial staff has volunteered to cook lunch each day for the last several months, Valerie Wales, Admin Assistant in Safety and Security, has spent countless hours shopping for the food at Sam's Club as well as Jeff's Market, a local grocery in Blue Grass. Other employees have also been creative in adding items to the menu to keep employee's interest and appetites up. Minute steaks, pork chop sandwiches, tacos, nachos, chicken breast sandwiches have all been added to the menu. Like at a an un-named fast food restaurant, you can also get a value meal with chips, potato salad, cole slaw or baked beans included with your meal. Again, Dennis went above and beyond when he had a friend donate some meat for use in the daily luncheon cookout and maintenance employee Doug Beland's wife baked a batch of delicious cookies which were also sold with proceeds going to the local United Way. So far, proceeds have exceeded well over $2000. Thanks to all the SSAB volunteers, the janitorial staff and especially the employees who not only got to enjoy a fresh hot lunch, but also help the United Way at the same time.
