Let's Talk Diversity!
"If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place."
Margaret Mead
Code of Ethics of the Muscatine Diversity Affinity Group
As members of the Muscatine Diversity Affinity Group, we recognize the importance of embracing our entire community and enlightening others in valuing differences. We acknowledge relationships between and among all peo
ple as vital to acceptance of differences.
We acknowledge understanding the broad scope of diversity is essential in establishing guiding principles for our Diversity Group. As such, our goal is to actively engage in dismantling racism and oppression through advocacy and education.
The following principles are expressed in broad statements to guide ethical decision making.
- We strive to create an environment free of racism by recognizing and addressing our individual bias.
- We will act honestly and seek to promote sensitivity to and knowledge of cultural and ethnic diversity.
- We will commit to speaking up to address and clarify our stance regarding derogatory statements made against others. We will use these opportunities to educate our community of the negative impact of words.
- We will seek to strengthen relationships among all races, gender and ethnic groups to restore, maintain and promote equality for all individuals in our community.
- We will treat others with respect and remain open to listen to others’ opinions.
- We will share, individually and collectively the responsibility for creating and maintaining a positive and productive community, where fairness and cooperation is practiced at all times.
- We will commit to taking action on all of our principles to create a great place to live, work and enjoy the Muscatine community.
